Retractable awnings are are a great addition to your outdoor living space. Not only will they make these outdoor areas more bearable, even during the hottest Summer months, they are also a nice investment that will increase the value of your home and property. But before you invest in a retractable awning or patio covering, it is important to research the different types of awnings available to decide which is appropriate for you. There are two types of retractable awnings, motorized or power driven, and manual versions. The motorized retractable awnings are typically powered by a 110 volt electric motor that raises and lowers the awning. Some of the higher end patio coverings also come with a remote control which allows you to control them from a distance. You won't even have to leave your seat. Because there are no vertical supports, the area beneath the awning is open. Instead of vertical supports, motorized awnings use a telescoping arm system that unfolds and retracts the awning as it is opened and closed. While the open area beneath is a nice added benefit, these types of retractable awnings are less sturdy than manual models in high winds. This should be taken into consideration if you live in areas prone to windy days. Manually operated retractable awnings, though obviously not motorized, are designed to be easy to retract and extend. They also have a few advantages over the power-driven alternatives. One, as mentioned above, because of their vertical support system, they are sturdier. These vertical support arms also allow owners to accessorize the covered area in ways not available with the motorized versions. Another advantage is the lower cost, and ease of installation. Not having to run electrical wiring to the motor bypasses one of the more complicated aspects of installing the power-driven models, making installation a piece of cake. And, with fewer electric parts, maintenance hassles are few and far between. Of course, the downside is, you have to manually raise and lower it yourself. But that's what kids are for, isn't it? :)
